A Royal Marine from 40 Commando has died during a fire fight with insurgent forces in the Sangin District of Helmand Province.
The death is the third in three days and the fourth to die in a week, bringing the total number of soldiers to die in this conflict to 303.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith said: "It is my sad duty to inform you that a marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines was killed in Sangin. He was on a security patrol, helping to better the lives of ordinary Afghans, when he was killed by small arms fire from insurgent forces. His courage in the face of danger and his selfless commitment will not be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We will remember him."
Next of kin have been informed.
It comes after the family of a Royal Marine Paul Warren, who was 23 was killed in an explosion in Afghanistan on Monday said his "cheeky smile" would be missed by everyone.
His family said in a statement: "A loving son, a brother and grandson who made us proud as a family. His cheeky smile will be missed by all who knew him."
