Peru: Justice System Fails to Act in Cases of Domestic Violence

In a country with an endemic problem of domestic violence, Peru's Ministry of Women started an awareness campaign and a free-help line. In just one month they received 3,500 calls from abused women. The Office of the Ombudsman argues that the ultimate stage of violence against women is feminicide and that to avoid reaching that step, it is necessary to intervene as soon as the first violent acts take place. Yet the Justice System is failing to proceed adequately. In 81% of the cases, the Prosecutor does not order protective measures. Rael Mora reports from Lima for teleSUR
